    Help for PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder or “PTSD” is a complex mental health issue. It is caused by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic or violent event. Events ranging from natural disasters, car accidents, assaults, and combat can cause PTSD. Veterans and first responders are at risk because of the number and severity of traumatic exposures they face. It is even possible to develop symptoms from hearing about the violent experience suffered by a loved one. People fail to realize that secondary exposure to trauma is often just as disturbing to the mind and body as first hand experience. Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD. It is mitigated by a number of variable including…

    The Science of Energy Psychology

Energy psychology is the blanket term for a group of therapeutic self-help methods, based in the idea that you can reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol, activate stress reducing genes, normalize aberrant brainwave patterns and increase serotonin, endorphins and other pleasure oriented neurotransmitters. This has been researched in clinical populations including veterans, survivors of genocide, and survivors of natural disasters. Adult attachment and relationships

The quality of adult relationships hinges on a number of factors including adult attachment. Do you ever look at the couples around you and wonder how they stay together? We each believe our perspective is the correct one and we each feel like what we give is more significant than what we get in…

    Tapping into Energy Psychology 101

I discovered energy psychology by accident. I knew someone who was scheduled for surgery and I was curious about alternative treatments that would aid healing. I read about acupuncture, then acupressure, Reiki, and IET. Finally, I found meridian tapping. Tapping was completely new to me. Without reading too much about it, I registered for a weekend seminar. I needed continuing ed credits, I was curious and it wasn’t too far.  I was in the minority. Other attendees were knowledgeable and excited about the meridian tapping technique. I sat through the class and practiced on my peers and myself.  At first, I felt nothing. I was skeptical and full of criticism. As the…

    Wanna know a secret?

As a therapist, I spend the majority of my time, listening to people.  I rarely talk.  When I do, clients usually care about what I have to say.  That said, I rarely come under fire for what I think or say.  Writing a blog is different.  Your words are out there (theoretically) for the whole world to judge and criticize or rebuff if they want to.  The internet is an ugly place.  It’s anonymity brings out the worst in people.  I try my best to stay away from social media, most of the time to avoid the animosity that seems to permeate every platform.  But, I really want to write.  I have…
